I started playing D&D in 2019.

Welcome!

This blog is about the D&D game I am currently playing in.
Until last year I hadn't really played much D&D or other role playing games. I had preferred mostly Warhammer 40,000 for the better part of 22 years. Some time last year, about March of last year I think, I started to think about playing D&D and knew I was tired of Warhammer.
Prior to that I started playing Neverwinter Nights on PC. I had played that years and years ago and that sort of got the ball rolling. I fell into youtube clips of D&D games and stories, probably all the same ones most of you have already seen or follow regularly.
Over that summer I asked my brother if I could join his game. He's been a DM for easily 20 years now. He said I absolutely could join the game.

And so I did.

Some other D&D history.
The last time, or times, I played I didn't feel very involved and recall playing various fighter class characters or a "dumb" Dwarf Barbarian one time in a living city game way back when. I think I just didn't get it.  I felt bad sitting around a table doing nothing and not really knowing what to do or how to do much other than attack. It didn't feel like how I wanted to spend my time, not when I could be rolling dice and moving mini's in a game or several games of 40K. It was definitely outside of my comfort zone.

I like problem solving and helping to solve and plan. I couldn't get into character very well because I wasn't sure how and too self conscious. I dreaded the playing as a character thing for years. Doing a voice or what ever.

What's different now?
Well, I'm over 40 and I know and have known most of the people playing for about 20 years and having that history and connection to the other players just makes the game as much about hanging out with them as it is about anything else. The social aspect is hugely fun for me.
However, I am actively trying to "do a good job".   This go round I am playing a wizard class character not a fighter and trying to be the "smart guy" I imagine as a wizard. I use my abilities to do things and help the other players where I can. I am being involved with what's going on and that's very enjoyable. And we don't really spend a lot of time working on or playing in character by which I mean doing a particular voice. At least nothing is expected. I think if it happens it happens but it's not the focus of the character or the players. (I think that explains it. )

That's the intro.
In the next post I'll tell you about my wizard who travels under the name Harlan, who may or may not be an evil wizard.
